Like many of you, I have a number of different projects going on across my personal, professional, and creative lives.
Sometimes I feel like they’re pulling me in different directions. Setting specific goals (the "what") across all of them can feel overwhelming.
So, this year I’ve started with the "how." A set of values that unified all my efforts. My approach:
Memorable. List 10 or so of my values. Pick my top 1-3 values, just few enough to remember.
Actionable. The “value” of something is its weight, its price, its worth. Think of a decision you need to make that involves choosing among different options. Can applying these values help you make a decision? (If not, go back to Step 1.)
Resilient. Separating the “what” from the “how,” do your values feel true to you no matter the “what”? Are they applicable across most (if not all) areas of your life, both personal and professional?
These values guide my doing, helping me select and prioritize a mutually supportive bouquet of projects for the year ahead.
They also inform my being – my presence, the way I show up for others, and the energy I bring to an action.
They can be expressed in big ways and in small, starting now.
So, what is your “how” for the year ahead?
